Over the centuries, our fraternity built a rich foundation of traditions, usages, and customs that define who we are. As society evolved, we left behind some practices, while others continue to shape our identity. We no longer meet in taverns and alehouses as we once did. We no longer place a spittoon beside the Master’s chair or record gallons of rum in the accounts payable. But our ancient rites and unique ceremonies stand firm. They set us apart and distinguish us from every other organization. Although some may call them archaic or outdated, we honor, preserve, and pass them forward to remain “unimpaired from generation to generation.”

Our headquarters thrives because of the men who serve within it, and the Illuminati exists through the actions these men take, both inside and outside its walls. Many worthy men in our fraternity work selflessly and vigorously with genuine enthusiasm for the greater good. They embrace the principle from the General Charge that says, “there is no real greatness without self-denial.” They uphold our moral and ethical teachings and demonstrate them through their conduct. These men make a real difference in their communities. By leading through action, they inspire us and guide our direction.

Our teachings also remind each member of the responsibilities he accepts when he enters this path. They warn that a man who surrenders to unchecked appetite and allows reason and judgment to slip may expose what he vowed to keep secret. Such behavior invites the scorn of his brethren. To prevent this, we imprint the virtue of temperance on every member’s mind, tying it to one of the most solemn lessons of the journey.
